The slab your builder and certifier will accept.

A house slab is the one part of your build that everything else stands on, and the one part you can never go back and fix once the frame is up. In Rockhampton that matters more than most places, because a large share of the region sits on reactive black soil. From the river flats through Gracemere, Berserker and parts of Frenchville, the ground is clay that swells when the wet season arrives and shrinks back hard through the dry. A slab that is not engineered for that movement will crack, lift at the corners and take the brick veneer with it.

We build house and extension slabs to AS 2870, the residential slabs and footings standard, using the site classification from a geotechnical soil test. That classification (commonly A, S, M, H1 or H2 in this region) tells the engineer how deep the edge beams go, how many internal stiffening beams the slab needs, and the top and bottom steel. We do not pour a structural slab without that design, because guessing on black soil is how you end up with a cracked floor and a void warranty.

Waffle pod vs stiffened raft.

Two slab systems suit Rockhampton conditions. A waffle pod slab sits on the ground over polystyrene void formers, which gives a stiff slab with good insulation and no excavation of beam trenches. A stiffened raft slab digs edge and internal beams into the ground for a deeper, heavier structure that can suit higher reactivity sites. The engineer makes the call from the soil test. Both, built correctly, give you a flat slab that stays flat.

A worked example.

A 180m² single-storey home slab on a class M Gracemere block: soil test and engineering around $1,400, slab supplied and finished at roughly $120 per square metre for around $21,600, plus certifier approval near $900. All up in the region of $23,900 for a fully engineered, signed-off slab ready for the frame. A simpler extension slab of 30m² on stable ground might run $4,000 to $5,500 all in. What type of house slab suits Rockhampton’s black soil?

On reactive black-soil sites in Rockhampton and Gracemere, a stiffened raft slab with deep edge beams and internal stiffening beams, or a waffle pod slab, both work when designed to the AS 2870 site classification. The right choice comes from the soil test. What never works on reactive clay is a plain shallow slab with light mesh.

How long does a house slab take in Rockhampton?

From approval, a typical residential slab is excavated and formed over two to four days, has its membrane and reinforcement laid and the certifier pre-pour inspection, then is poured in a single day and cured for seven days before the build starts. Allow two to four weeks for the soil test, engineering and certifier approval beforehand.

Yes.
