Two different grounds on the northside.

North Rockhampton splits into two very different concreting jobs. Down on the flatter, older streets through Berserker, Park Avenue and Lakes Creek the ground is often reactive clay, the same black soil that runs through much of the city. Up on the elevated blocks in Frenchville and Norman Gardens you hit firmer ground and sloping sites. Each needs a different approach: the clay flats need engineered footings to AS 2870 for the ground movement, while the hill blocks need careful set-out and falls so the slab and driveway sit level and drain properly.

A lot of the newer Frenchville and Norman Gardens homes sit on a fall. A sloping block changes everything about a driveway and slab: the cut and fill, the retaining, the falls for drainage, and the grip of the driveway surface. This is where exposed aggregate earns its keep on the northside, because the textured stone surface stays grippy on a steep wet driveway where a plain trowelled finish gets slick.
