The best time of year to pour concrete in Rockhampton.

Concrete does not care about your calendar, it cares about temperature, humidity, wind and ground moisture. In Central Queensland those four things swing hard between the wet and the dry. Here is which months genuinely give you a better slab, how we pour safely through the wet season anyway, and when waiting is a waste of time.

The straight answer

April to September, and it is not close.

April through to September, and the middle of that window is close to ideal. The dry season gives you mild days in the low to mid twenties, low humidity, almost no rain risk, and stable ground moisture in the reactive black soil. Concrete placed in May or June cures at a sensible rate, finishers get a workable window instead of chasing a stiffening slab, and the ground under it is not swinging between saturated and bone dry. The trade-off is that everyone else wants those months too, so book early.

Rockhampton gets the large majority of its rain between November and March, and it arrives in the way that is worst for concrete: not gentle drizzle, but 60mm in an afternoon off a tropical low. Add summer days that routinely sit at 33 to 36 degrees and you have both of the classic concrete problems, rain damage and heat damage, in the same three months. The dry season removes both at once. That is the entire argument, and it is a strong one.

There is a second, quieter reason the dry wins here, and it is specific to this region. The black soil across Gracemere and the Fitzroy flats swells and shrinks with moisture. Pouring onto ground that is saturated from a February deluge means the soil under your new slab is at its maximum swell, and it has nowhere to go but down over the following months. Pour in the dry and the moisture is closer to its long-term average. It is not the whole story, the engineering in slab prep on reactive soil matters far more, but it is a free advantage.

November to March

Pouring through the wet season.

Yes, and we do it regularly, but it needs planning rather than optimism. From November to March the risks are a soaked subgrade that will not compact, rain within the first few hours washing the surface out, and 35 degree heat flash-setting the slab. The way it is managed is to watch the forecast to the hour, keep the excavation covered, pour early in the morning, use retarder in the mix, and have plastic sheeting on site before the truck arrives. If a tropical low is sitting off the coast we will tell you to wait a week.

The most underrated wet-season problem is not the pour itself, it is the ground. A subgrade that has taken three days of rain cannot be compacted to anything useful. Roll it and it pumps. Pour on it and the slab is sitting on a sponge. That is a genuine reason to postpone, and any concreter who shrugs and pours anyway is telling you something about how the rest of the job will go. Rain in the first two to four hours after placement is the other one. Fresh concrete has no surface strength, so rain pits it, dilutes the top paste and leaves a weak dusty layer that fails within a season. After the initial set it matters far less, and after the finish is done a light shower is actually free curing. The gap between those two states is only a few hours, which is why the forecast decides the day.

The heat

What 35 degrees does to a slab.

It ruins badly managed slabs. At 35 degrees with a hot dry westerly, the surface water evaporates faster than the concrete can bleed it back, and you get plastic shrinkage cracking, crazing and a dusty weak surface within hours. The fixes are all about slowing evaporation: a 6am start so the pour is finished before the peak, chilled or retarded mix, evaporation retardant sprayed on the surface, wind breaks, and curing compound or wet cover applied the moment the finish is done. Skip those and the slab is compromised before it is a day old.

Wind is the part people never expect. A 25 knot westerly at 30 degrees pulls more water out of a fresh slab than a still 38 degree day does. That is why our summer starts are early and our summer trucks carry retarder as standard, and it is why a exposed aggregate or decorative pour, which needs a longer working window to finish properly, gets pushed to the cooler months where we can help it.

Curing

How long before you can use it.

You can walk on it the next day. Light domestic vehicles after seven days. Heavy vehicles, machinery or a loaded shed after 28 days, because that is the age at which the design strength is specified under AS 1379. Curing itself, meaning keeping the moisture in so the concrete keeps gaining strength, should run a full seven days minimum, and in a Rockhampton summer that means active watering or a curing compound rather than just leaving it. A slab that dries out on day two never reaches the strength on the docket.

This is where the season quietly changes the quality of the job. In June, a slab left under a curing compound in 22 degree air cures itself with almost no help. In January, the same slab needs someone on site wetting it down or it will lose the fight. The concrete you buy is identical. What you get at 28 days is not.

Timing and money

Does the season change the price?

The rate itself barely moves. Our 2026 bands hold year-round: plain slab or path $90 to $130 per m², house or extension slab $90 to $140 per m², shed slab with a thickened edge $110 to $160 per m², exposed aggregate $130 to $200 per m², with reactive black-soil footings adding 15 to 30 per cent. The season changes the extras and the lead time, not the base rate.

A worked example. A 45m² plain driveway at Parkhurst on stable ground, quoted at $110 per m², is $4,950 in either season. Book it for June and that is the number, with a two to four week wait because the dry season book is full. Book it for January and you add roughly $150 to $300 of retarder and evaporation control, you accept a real chance of a weather postponement, and the wait is often only a week because nobody else wants that slot. Which of those is better depends entirely on whether you need the driveway or the last $300.

One piece of timing that has nothing to do with weather: the paperwork. If your job touches the kerb, the crossover section sits on council land and needs a permit from Rockhampton Regional Council, or from Livingstone Shire Council if you are out at Yeppoon or Emu Park. That approval runs on its own clock regardless of the forecast, and it queues up in the dry season along with everything else. If you are aiming at a June pour, start the permit around the end of the wet rather than a fortnight out, or the paperwork becomes the thing that pushes you into spring. So: if it is a structural slab on reactive black soil and you have the choice, waiting for the dry is genuinely worth it, because the soil moisture is stable and the cure is easy. If it is a driveway, a path or a shed slab and the site drains well, any month of the year is fine with the right precautions.
