Gracemere · Reactive black-soil country

Concreting in Gracemere.

Gracemere is black-soil country, and that makes the slab engineering the most important part of any job out here. From new homes in the growth estates to big rural shed slabs, we build engineered footings to AS 2870 that handle the swell and shrink of the Gracemere clay.

Why Gracemere

The Gracemere concreting story.

This is reactive-clay country.

More than anywhere else we work, Gracemere is where the soil test is not optional. The ground here is heavy reactive clay that AS 2870 routinely classes M, H1 or H2. That clay can swell tens of millimetres when the wet season soaks in, then shrink hard and crack as it dries through the Central Queensland winter. A slab built on shallow footings with light mesh, the kind a cheap operator will quote, will lift at the corners, crack across the floor and pull the brickwork with it. We have seen it on plenty of Gracemere jobs that were poured on the cheap. Read the reactive-soil slab prep guide for the full picture.

Engineered footings, every time.

For Gracemere we start every structural job with a geotechnical soil test, get an engineer’s slab and footing design for the site classification, and build the deeper edge beams, internal stiffening beams and correct steel that the clay demands. It is the same care whether it is a new house slab in one of the growth estates or a rural shed slab for a machinery shed. We do not pour a structural slab in Gracemere without that engineering, because guessing on this ground is how slabs fail.

Rural and acreage sheds.

A lot of Gracemere and the surrounding rural blocks run big sheds for machinery, trucks, hay and the home workshop. Those slabs carry serious loads and sit on the worst of the reactive ground, so they get a designed thickness, heavy reinforcement and engineered edge beams. We set them out to your shed kit so it bolts straight down.

Typical Gracemere jobs.

  • New-estate house slabs engineered for class M and H reactive clay
  • Large rural and machinery shed slabs with designed reinforcement
  • Driveways with proper base prep so they don’t crack on clay
  • Extension and granny-flat slabs on established blocks
  • Exposed-aggregate and coloured paths and patios
