Which driveway surface actually lasts on Rockhampton black soil
For a normal suburban driveway in Rockhampton the answer is 100mm of 25 MPa reinforced concrete on a compacted base, at $90 to $130 per m², which is about $4,000 to $5,900 on a 45m² driveway and lasts 30 to 50 years. Asphalt is cheaper per m² but softens above roughly 60° surface temperature and lasts 12 to 20 years. Pavers on sand ripple on reactive clay. Gravel is the only sensible choice past about 100 metres of driveway.

It compares the six surfaces you can realistically put on a driveway here, what each one costs in 2026, how long it lasts in this climate on this soil, and which one we would actually put on our own place. No surface wins every time, and the cheap specification that fails early here is a specific, predictable thing that you can learn to spot on a quote.

What the numbers on the quote actually mean
Every one of those surfaces has two or three numbers attached to it, and those numbers are where quotes quietly differ from each other. Here is what they are describing.
Concrete: the thickness, the MPa and the mesh code
A driveway quote should name three things: slab thickness in millimetres, the concrete strength in MPa, and the mesh designation. Thickness is the structural part and 100mm is the residential standard for cars. MPa is the compressive strength the mix is designed to reach at 28 days, and 25 MPa is the normal driveway spec here, with 32 MPa used closer to the coast at Yeppoon and Emu Park where salt air is in play. The mesh code tells you bar diameter and spacing: SL72 is 7mm bar at 200mm centres, SL82 is 8mm bar. A quote that says only “concrete driveway, steel reinforced” is not a specification, it is a sentence.
Base: the depth, the material and the compaction
Under the slab you want 100mm of compacted road base as a minimum on stable ground, and often 150mm to 200mm on reactive clay. The word to look for is compacted, and an honest quote will say how: a plate compactor or a roller, in layers no thicker than about 150mm at a time. Base is the line item that quietly disappears from cheap quotes because you cannot see it once the concrete is on top, and it is why two quotes for the same driveway can be $1,500 apart.
Asphalt: the depth and the mix size
Residential asphalt is usually laid 30mm to 50mm thick over a prepared base, and the mix is described by its largest stone, so AC10 means a 10mm mix. Thirty millimetres of asphalt over an unprepared surface is the classic cheap driveway, and it will rut where the car parks within two summers in this heat.
Pavers: the thickness and the wear rating
Driveway pavers should be 60mm thick as a minimum and 80mm where a heavy vehicle turns. A 40mm paver is a path paver and it will crack under a car. Paver makers also publish an abrasion or wear class, and the driveway grade is a different product to the courtyard grade even when the two look the same in the display yard.
The four Rockhampton conditions that decide the specification
- Reactive black soil. Big parts of Rockhampton, Gracemere, Depot Hill and the Fitzroy flats sit on clay that AS 2870 classifies as M, H1 or H2. It swells through the wet and shrinks back through the dry, and the vertical movement is measured in tens of millimetres, not fractions of one. A rigid, reinforced, jointed concrete slab rides that movement as a plate. A sand bedded paver field follows it exactly. The detail is in our guide to slab prep on reactive soil.
- The wet season, and where the water goes. From December to March the region gets intense, short falls, and a driveway is a large sealed catchment pointed at your house. A fall of about 1 in 100 away from the building, plus a grated drain at the garage door if the driveway runs downhill toward it, is not an optional extra here. Gravel and other unbound surfaces wash into the gutter in a single storm cell.
- Heat. Rockhampton spends a good part of the year above 33 degrees, with plenty of days over 38. That is hard on bituminous binders and easy on concrete, and it is the biggest technical argument against asphalt for a short driveway where a car sits parked and turning in the same spot every day.
- Access and the slope of your block. On the hill blocks at Frenchville, The Range and parts of Norman Gardens a concrete truck cannot always reach the pour, and you need a line pump at $650 to $1,500. That shifts the comparison, because you cannot pump asphalt and you can barrow pavers. Worth knowing before you line quotes up next to each other.

The cheap specification that fails early in Rockhampton
It is always the same job, and we get asked to look at three or four a month. Seventy five millimetres of concrete, mesh lying flat on the dirt instead of sitting on bar chairs, no compacted base, no control joints or joints cut too late, poured onto black soil in October and left to dry in the sun with nothing done about curing.
Here is why each of those matters. Seventy five millimetres has far less bending capacity than 100mm, so it cracks under the wheel path instead of spanning a soft spot. Mesh on the ground does nothing at all: the steel has to sit up in the slab to resist the tension that opens a crack, and a bar chair costs less than a dollar. No base means the slab bears directly on clay that is going to move. Joints cut later than about 12 hours after the pour, or not cut at all, mean the slab picks its own crack line, and it never picks a straight one. And no curing on a 36 degree Rockhampton afternoon gives you plastic shrinkage cracking and a dusty, soft surface inside the first day.
The saving on that job is real: about $25 to $35 per m², so roughly $1,200 on a 45m² driveway. The cost of undoing it is a full replacement, plus $40 to $80 per m² to break out and cart the old slab away. What “commercial grade” and the other sales words are worth
- Commercial grade: not a defined term. Commercial slabs are specified by MPa, thickness and reinforcement like every other slab. Ask what the MPa and the mesh actually are and the phrase evaporates.
- Heavy duty: meaningful only when it arrives with numbers. Heavy duty on our quotes means 125mm or 150mm with SL82 and a deeper base, and it says exactly that on the page.
- Lifetime warranty: almost always the lifetime of the product in the maker’s terms rather than yours, and almost always excluding cracking caused by ground movement, which is the failure mode that actually happens here. Read the exclusions, not the promise.
- Twenty year sealer: no sealer holds up for 20 years under Central Queensland UV. Penetrating silane and siloxane sealers give 5 to 10 years, acrylics 2 to 4 years on a driveway. Plan on recoating, and read sealing and maintaining concrete.
- Fibre instead of mesh: macro synthetic and steel fibres do a real job controlling early shrinkage cracking, but on a driveway over reactive clay they are an addition to mesh rather than a replacement for it, unless an engineer has designed it that way and signed the drawing.
What we would specify on a typical Rockhampton house
A 45m² double driveway on a normal suburban block at Norman Gardens, Kawana, Parkhurst or Gracemere, carrying two cars and the occasional box trailer: 100mm of 25 MPa concrete, SL72 mesh on bar chairs, over 100mm of compacted road base, saw cut or tooled control joints at roughly 3 metre centres, an expansion joint where it meets the garage slab and the crossover, a fall of about 1 in 100 away from the building, and a broom finish for grip when it is wet. Cured for seven days with curing compound. That is about $4,000 to $5,900 in 2026, and it is the driveway we would put on our own house.
Move out to the coast at Yeppoon or Emu Park and we lift the mix to 32 MPa and increase the cover over the steel, because chloride from salt air is what rusts reinforcement and spalls a surface. If the site is classified H1 or H2 we add a thickened edge and talk about isolating the driveway from the house slab. If a caravan or a boat lives on it, 125mm and SL82.
When concrete is not the right call
We pour concrete for a living and we still talk people out of it several times a year. If your driveway is 150 metres of acreage track at Mount Morgan or out past Gracemere, concreting it is a conversation with a five figure number well past $50,000, and a well built, well drained gravel driveway at $35 to $70 per m² is the right answer. If your existing slab is sound and just tired, an overlay or a grind and seal beats replacement on cost and on waste. If you are selling in three months, a $600 pressure clean and a $700 seal will show better per dollar than a new driveway you will not get back at auction. And if the slab you have is cracked because a tree root is under it, dealing with the tree comes before any surface decision at all.
The honest disclosure is that we do not lay asphalt, sprayed seals or pavers, so the two cheapest options in that table are not work we would win. They are in the table because you asked the real question.
What to ask whoever is quoting you
- What slab thickness, what MPa and what mesh code, written on the quote?
- How deep is the base, what material is it, and how is it compacted?
- Where do the control joints go and when are they cut?
- Which way does the water fall, and where does it end up?
- How will it be cured, and for how many days?
